Living Building Pilot Program

On December 14, 2009, the Seattle City Council adopted an ordinance that creates a pilot program for Living Buildings in Seattle. The Living Building Ordinance (No. 123206) encourages up to 12 unique Living Buildings to be developed in Seattle over the next three years.

The goal of the Living Building Pilot Program is to promote the development of buildings that meet the Living Building Challenge. The ordinance expands the list of departures available from code requirements that would otherwise discourage or prevent buildings from meeting this standard.

More importantly, it will help identify barriers to sustainability and performance-based building design within current land use codes.
